Abstract

Although there have been numerous studies on the impact of automatic essay scoring system (AES) on English writing, research on the complex relationship between AES, writing motivation, self-efficacy belief, and English writing achievement in Chinese Foreign language (FL) context is still underexplored. This study attempts to reveal the complex relationship between the four factors and how AES, writing motivation, and self-efficacy belief affect English writing achievement to enrich current research findings. Surveys were conducted based on participants' writing results on AES and online questionnaires. Data analyses were based on mediation analysis. The participants were 306 non-English majors in a Chinese University. The results showed there were positive and significant relationships between the four variables and AES could improve students' writing achievement through the mediation of writing motivation and self-efficacy belief. The findings support that the use of technology can strengthen students FL learning and the importance of motivation and self-efficacy belief in FL writing.

尽管已经有大量关于自动作文评分系统(AES)对英语写作影响的研究,但在中国外语学习环境中,对AES、写作动机、自我效能信念和英语写作成绩之间复杂关系的研究仍未得到充分探索。本研究试图揭示这四个因素之间的复杂关系,以及AES、写作动机和自我效能信念如何影响英语写作成绩,以丰富当前的研究结果。研究基于参与者在AES上的写作结果和在线问卷进行了调查。数据分析基于中介分析。参与者是一所中国大学的306名非英语专业学生。结果表明,这四个变量之间存在积极且显著的关系,并且AES可以通过写作动机和自我效能信念的中介作用提高学生的写作成绩。这些发现支持了技术的使用可以加强学生的外语学习,以及动机和自我效能信念在外语写作中的重要性。
