A case of posttraumatic amnestic syndrome is described, with spontaneous confabulations as the main symptom. It is supposed that disturbances of recent memory are an indispensable, although insufficient condition for confabulation development. The author thinks that psychopathological symptoms, pathognomonic for damage to the mediobasal parts of the frontal lobes play a role in the pathogenesis of confabulations.
