Abstract

Nitrogen balance and other metabolic activity can be maintained by adequate calorie and protein supply during immediate postgastrectomy period. Despite high intake of protein, great loss of nitrogen seems to occur in urine during infusion with polyalcohol sugars as compared with natural sugars, e.g., glucose, fructose and maltose. The best utilization of amino acids resulting in positive nitrogen balance and energy utilization were shown to be achieved by combined use of Intralipid, glucose, maltose and essential as well as non-essential amino acids in the clinical and laboratory studies.
