The technique described herein is simple, fast and provides a secure anastomosis. Mobilization and extensive dissection of either the Hartmann pouch or the stump of the sigmoid colon is avoided. In addition, there is no need for pursestring sutures, which may be difficult to place in patients with short rectal stumps.
