Amphibian embryos can develop inspite of dramatic deformations produced by constraints in the surrounding medium, and can even ultimately recover a normal morphology. Consequently, no sequential change of shape is necessary for normal morphogenesis and the form of the embryo appears to be determined by cell activities intrinsic to each stage.
