Gastric digestion is concerned with the storing, grinding and delivery of foods by the stomach and occurs in 3 phases: adaptive relaxation, liquefaction of solids, and emptying of liquefied solids. These processes are affected by psychological factors, by the sight, smell, and taste of food, and by the volume and composition of the meal. Starvation probably also influences these processes. These effects are mediated by parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves and by hormones of enteric or extradigestive origin.
