Pharmacological strategies in depression.

Several pharmacological manoeuvres may be considered when the first attempt at antidepressant treatment fails. The importance of adequate dosage and duration in any treatment trial are emphasized, and the evidence in support of combined antidepressants, lithium-antidepressant combinations, the addition of triiodothyronine or tryptophan, the use of anticonvulsants, and the use of vanadium inactivators, is evaluated.
