The weight loss induced by bariatric surgery is accompanied by an important reduction in lean mass, where the aerobic capacity reflected by the peak oxygen consumption (V̇Opeak) may not improve in patients who remain sedentary after bariatric surgery. Whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) associated with physical exercise can improve aerobic capacity, body composition, and anxiety level after surgery. The aim of this study was to analyze whether a dynamic exercise training program (DET) plus WB-EMS after bariatric surgery improves aerobic capacity, body composition, sleep quality, and anxiety level.
Randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study. Thirty-four patients were randomized after bariatric surgery into the WB-EMS (n = 17) or Sham (n = 17) groups. Body composition, anthropometry, sleep quality, anxiety level, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) were performed before bariatric surgery and after DET which consisted of 30-min dynamic exercises applied five times a week, for a 6-week. WB-EMS sessions were interspersed for 3 days a week using currents for endurance (85 Hz, 350 ms), and two sessions for strength (30 Hz, 350 ms) during DET.
Only the WB-EMS group significantly increased time (p = 0.002) and distance (p = 0.004) during CPX, in addition to the improvement in systolic blood pressure (p = < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (p = < 0.001) and leg fatigue (p = < 0.04) following recovery from exercise, when compared to Sham after intervention. Furthermore, both groups improved V̇Opeak (p = 0.03), and decreased total fat mass (p = < 0.001), sleep quality (p = 0.007), and anxiety level (p = 0.004) after the intervention.
DET associated with WB-EMS improved exercise performance, the cardiovascular response, and leg fatigue. Moreover, early intervention composed of dynamic exercises was able to improve anxiety and sleep quality as well as aerobic capacity.
