To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Academic Grit Scale for nursing students.
Grit, defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals, is widely recognized as a predictor of success in demanding fields like nursing. Valid and reliable instruments are needed to assess grit, particularly in the academic context among Chinese nursing students, given potential cultural influences.
A cross-sectional descriptive design.
A total of 450 nursing students from two local medical universities completed the Academic Grit Scale, the Short Grit Scale and the Big Five Inventory and reported grade point average. Data were analyzed for item characteristics, reliability (Cronbach's α and split-half), content validity (expert review), structural validity (confirmatory factor analysis), convergent and discriminant validity (correlations) and criterion validity (hierarchical regression).
The Chinese Academic Grit Scale had good item discrimination, high internal reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.94, split-half coefficient = 0.92) and excellent content validity (item content validity index = 0.80-1.00, average content validity index = 0.96). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the original one-factor structure (χ/df = 4.92, p < 0.001). The scale showed good convergent and discriminant validity with general grit and Big Five personalities and satisfactory criterion validity such that the score could explain incremental variance in predicting grade point average.
The Chinese Academic Grit Scale is a reliable and valid measure of academic grit among nursing students. It has potential value in identifying students who may benefit from interventions to cultivate academic grit and success.
