Carney complex (CNC) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by endocrine and nonendocrine tumors, including cardiac myxomas, which are a leading cause of mortality due to embolic events, arrhythmias, heart failure, and sudden cardiac death.
We present the case of a 33-year-old man with CNC who experienced stroke-like symptoms due to recurrence of a left atrial myxoma 10 years after initial resection. He underwent successful surgical resection.
Cardiac myxoma recurrence is higher in patients with CNC, with rates up to 22% compared with 2% to 3% in sporadic cases. This case underscores the importance of lifelong, multidisciplinary care and rigorous surveillance to prevent severe cardiovascular complications.
TAKE-HOME MESSAGES: Although rare, it is important to recognize the clinical features and complications of CNC, including the increased risk of recurrent cardiac myxomas. Lifelong cardiac imaging is recommended at 6- to 12-month intervals in patients with CNC.
