Sensitivity of 172 strains of gram-negative bacteria isolated from the urine of urological patients was tested to the beta-lactam antibiotics penicillin, oxacillin, carbenicillin, cefradin, cerhazolin, cephapirin, cefotaxim, and cefuroxim. The method of two-fold serial dilutions in a meat-peptone agar was used. In the therapeutic concentrations the above antibiotics except carbenicillin, cefotaxim and cefuroxim had no inhibitory effect on P. aeruginosa. With respect to E. coli the highest activity was observed with the use of carbenicillin and the new cephalosporins cephazolin, cephapirin, cefradin, cefotaxim and cefuroxim. A significant number of Proteus strains sensitive to the minimal concentrations of the cephalosporins and carbenicillin were detected. However, highly resistant strains were also isolated.
