Fifty indirect traumatic ruptures of the globe were reviewed in order to isolate factors important in determining the visual outcome: (1) The presence of a hyphema at the initial examination is a very bad prognostic sign. (2) A small rupture carries a better prognosis than a large rupture (arbitrary dividing line, 9 mm). (3) Cryotherapy or diatherapy used at the wound edge at the time of surgical repair improves prognosis.
