From carps showing the symptoms of acute infectious dropsy, a virus was isolated for the first time in Hungary. On the basis of physicochemical and serological tests and electron microscopy, the virus was identified as spring viraemia carp virus and assumed to have a primary role in the acute form of infectious dropsy known so far as a bacterial disease.
