Psychopharmacology in the secondary and tertiary prevention of mental illness.

Some of the changes brought about by the introduction of therapeutically effective psychotropic drugs were reviewed in the context of secondary and tertiary prevention of mental illness. The role of maintenance therapy in lowering the prevalence of manifest psychiatric disorders and defective functioning due to mental illness, was discussed.
