Various implications for health education in relation to current approaches to community medicine are reviewed. Health education activities and needs in the Republic of South Africa are surveyed. Suggested solutions to existing problems include the development of more co-ordinated planning and implementation and evaluation of health education programmes. The urgent need for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching facilities is stressed. It is suggested that the role and services of the South African National Council for Health Education should be reviewed, so that the Council's resources can in future be better utilized.
