This paper reviews the literature concerning the penile prosthesis. Included are discussions of the historical development of the penile prosthesis, characteristics of patients treated with prosthetic implantation, assessment techniques utilized in patient selection, and the relative outcome and complication rates for the two major types of prostheses.
