Local neuronal damage, as indicated by choline acetyltransferase and glutamate decarboxylase activities, elicited by intrastriatal injections of kainic acid was increased by local injection of morphine and decreased by prior injection of naloxone. Peripheral injections of morphine or naloxone had little significant effect although the same trends appeared.
