Specific changes in the soluble antigens (exoantigen) of have been studied in relation to the process of antigenic variation. Such antigens, prepared from variant substrains of trypanosomes, were compared immunologically by agglutination, precipitin and mouse protection tests. Direct and absorption tests demonstrated that specific antibodies were produced to the exoantigen of each variant population and that the immunogenicity of the antigenic components decreases as infection proceeds.
