Abstract
This paper reviews literature concerning the placebo with respect to its true meaning, and possible modes of action. It also considers the type of person most likely to respond to the placebo effect. These factors are then discussed with a particular emphasis being put on the significance of the placebo in clinical pharmacological studies.
