This paper describes the setting up and operation of a Crisis Intervention Service in a semi-rural community serving a population of 75,000 within a 20-mile radius. It was established in response to the mounting problem of drug abuse by youth in the community. Workers in the service were drawn from within the peer group being served, and the service has been deliberately client-orientated. It has developed as a community project. Significant features behind its success are described. Evaluation on a cost-effectiveness basis shows considerable saving in both financial and professional time terms, which should interest any organization, medical, social or political, concerned with these matters.
