The possible influence of estrogens, progesterone and prolactin, even as their interrelationships, in the genesis of the premenstrual syndrome are analysed. Special reference is made to their action on hydrosaline metabolism and vascular permeability. Some drugs used in the treatment of this syndrome indicate that a central role might be played by the vascular filter.
