HeLa cells exposed to low concentrations of prednisolone and other glucocorticoids acquired resistance to lysis with sodium deoxycholate. The effect showed considerable specificity by being confined to steroids that cause elevation of alkaline phosphatase in tissue culture and are known to have anti-inflammatory effects in vivo.
