Multiple-unit activity from many brain sites of the unrestrained cat was recorded by means of an averaging technique during all phases of sleep and waking. All thalamic and medial reticular sites showed activity levels closely correlated with the animal's observed behavior even under conditions when the electroencephalogram appeared dissociated from behavior.
