As part of the normal everyday operation of a hospital, vast amounts of nursing personnel data are generated and recorded in a nearly irretrievable form as a result of ineffective processing of employees' time cards. A major purpose of this investigation is to demonstrate how, with a small amount of additional effort, any hospital using a computerized accounting system can develop this data into forms useful for decision making. In this study, certain performance characteristics—terminations, lateness, sickness, absenteeism—of nursing personnel were related to their personal and job characteristics. The results recommend standards for hiring and allocating personnel to diminish these problems.
