The author analyses 48 cases with intramedullary tumors encountered among 516 cases with tumors of the spinal cord and spine. Operations were conducted on 26 patients without applying microsurgical techniques and on 22 patients with the use of a surgical microscope or a binocular magnifier. Microsurgery made it possible to reduce postoperative mortality from 38.5 to 4.5%, exclude various complications (postoperative liquorrhea, meningitis), restore fully the disturbed functions of the spinal cord, prolong the postoperative remission, and the patient's survival.
