Tupper's resection arthroplasty with interposition of the volar plate was performed 75 severely destroyed metacarpophalangeal joints in 22 patients during the period 1970--74. The average passive mobility obtained was 63 degrees. The operative technique and complications are described, and the obvious advantages of the method are emphasized. This procedure is one part of a more comprehensive reconstruction whose functional result is influenced by the overall condition and balance of the hand.
