A description and recommendation for modification of the usually employed sharply pointed Steinmann pin and Schanz screw are given. The suggested low angle of the triangular point which has cutting edges only to the minimum diameter of the drill will prevent damage to the soft tissues. The modification has the advantages of the previously used pin and screw for tapping but involves less risk for the patient and staff. The new design has proved successful for over a year in many cases.
