Abstract
The authors sketch the development of antipsychotic-drug treatment for schizophrenic patients focusing on efficacy in acute treatment, prevention of relapse during maintenance treatment, and differential symptom response. They also describe current treatment strategies that attempt to reduce the amount of medication required through continuous dose reduction or through the use of intermittent treatment.
