The pharmacology of the outer retina is briefly reviewed, and some recent experiments on the pharmacology of isolated horizontal cells from the carp retina are described. Our results indicate that there are at least three classes of neurotransmitter receptors on carp horizontal cell. One receptor type interacts with L-glutamate, a second with dopamine, and a third with vasoactive intestinal peptide.
