This case report is one of the few observations in man showing REM-latency reduction as one of the neurophysiological consequences of abrupt neuroleptic suspension. One should take care not to attribute diagnostic significance to EEG or sleep-features which may be drug-dependent. The underlying neurochemical mechanisms are discussed, transient cholinergic overactivity is emphasized in neuroleptic withdrawal.
