A patient is reported who developed acute cholestasis after alcohol abuse. Extrahepatic cholestasis was excluded at laparotomy. Liver microscopy showed cholestasis with slight parenchymal damage but was otherwise normal. In vitro measurements of hepatic protein synthesis indicated increased synthesizing capacity. This is the fourth reported case of so-called acute alcoholic cholestasis.
