Abstract

In conclusion, the earlier reports on the phagocytosis-enhancing effect of interferon have now been widely confirmed. Interferon not only activates non-Fc-receptor-mediated phagocytosis such as colloidal carbon or latex beads, but also stimulates Fc-receptor-mediated ingestion of IgG-coated erythrocytes. However, it should be cautioned that all inducers of interferon do not depend on the interferon they stimulate to activate macrophages. The notion that interferon may be a very nonspecific yet crucial factor in the basic defense mechanisms of the body has been further reinforced.
