Diagnosis of anorexia nervosa follows strict criteria. It's most striking manifestations are somatic and may be suggestive of other conditions. It originates in a psychological situation which is characteristic of the illness. A troubled relationship between mother and child in the past is usually demonstrated during interview. Once anorexia nervosa has become apparent, complex problems arise between patient and family. These problems differ according to the patient's sex. The best management can be inferred from these facts. Physical and psychiatric care should be combined. Psychiatric management ranges from family therapy (which may be questionable) to longterm individual psychotherapy.
