Immunocytochemical techniques can be used to demonstrate prolactin immunoreactivity in amniotic membranes, especially in the decidual cells, but also in primary trophoblastic cells embedded in the choriodecidual junction. While it is possible that some of the prolactin is synthetised in situ, part of it may also be bound to its specific receptors.
