The usefulness of a handle is greatly dependent upon the correlation of grip circumference to the diameter of the hand. Since up to now, industry has produced handles primarily to fit men's hands, the question as to what extent women can use a normal hammer with a 20 to 30 mm shaft diameter without disadvantage, has remained open. The research results show that grip circumferences measured on a Herig cone show a much smaller sexual dimorphism than many other body measurements. Sexual differentiation is shown to be so small that it can be neglected in practice.
