Ureteral replacement and urinary diversion using bovine carotid artery heterograft were attempted in dogs. The graft failed for several reasons: stasis proximal to an aperistaltic segment, anastomotic stricture, and fibrotic narrowing of the graft. The disease entities and criteria for successful ureteral replacement and diversion are reviewed.
