Therapeutic bloodletting dates back to ancient times. With the development of sophisticated in vivo cell separators, it has become an established and effective modality in the treatment of a number of hematologic-oncologic diseases. Apheresis must, however, be used with discrimination--only when more conservative measures have proved inadequate.
