Abstract

Sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate (Merthiolate), used for preservation of buffer solutions, was found to inhibit the antigen-antibody binding reactions in radioimmunoassay systems in a noncompetitive manner. This effect is attributable to the mercury ion per se.
