Double-contrast examination. Part I: Oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.

The double-contrast upper gastrointestinal radiograph is an excellent modality for detailed evaluation of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Through its use subtle inflammatory and neoplastic lesions can be diagnosed. It also provides a more detailed look at gross pathology than can be achieved with conventional studies alone. Despite the benefits of double-contrast the single-contrast phase of the study remains important and it is included in all cases. This combined study remains an important modality in the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal disease.
