1 year after end-organ destruction in one ear about 70% of the neurons in Scarpa's ganglion are found to be surviving as compared to the contralateral side. They show different signs of degeneration, such as shrinkage, resorption vacuoles and loss of myelin layers. The peak in the distribution of layers of myelin is found, shifted to lower numbers. The loss of myelin layers in perikarya surrounded by few layers only could result in the appearance of a population of unmyelinated cells.
