In the early 1970s the 10-day rule was introduced into all radiography departments in the UK in order to eliminate the possibility of irradiating a developing embryo during radiography. Until now that rule has been regarded as generally a sufficient measure for this purpose. Recent findings in gynaecological research, however, may indicate that a new rule should be considered in order to ensure more certainly the safety of early life in the womb.
