Anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase revealed projections from local neuronal populations in the superior olivary complex and inferior colliculus of bats which specifically responded to amplitude-modulated stimuli to nucleus reticularis pontis oralis. Neurons from this reticular nucleus generated synchronized discharges to amplitude-modulated stimuli within frequency ranges corresponding to those in the specific auditory structures. A conclusion is made that after encoding in the specific auditory channel, synchronized discharges propagate outside the sensory system.
