Computerized data base systems designed to work with pedigree data can be used for both routine collection and display of pedigree information, as well as to gather research data for input into genetic analysis programs. Segregation and linkage analysis methods can be valuable for elucidating the genetic and environmental mechanisms of a particular disorder and as a first step toward discovering the biochemical basis behind them. These methods can also be used to provide more precise counseling to at-risk individuals.
