Abnormal psychical disturbances after surgical procedures may either be attributed to the experience of illness or to cerebral dysfunction, directly or indirectly including the brain in the process of the disease. The latter results in somatic psychotic states and "Durchgangssyndrom". The postoperative psychosis is not a nosological entity.
