Abstract

Cerebral mycotic aneurysms, which are found primarily on the branches of the middle cerebral artery, may be the cause of either an intracranial haemorrhage or an ischaemic insult. Of the intracerebral haemorrhages reported by Russell, 6% were caused by mycotic aneurysms (Jellinger, 1979). A case of mycotic aneurysm of the middle cerebral artery with an intracerebral haemorrhage in a patient with echinococcal cysts in the lungs, pericardium and left kidney is reported and discussed. Two weeks postoperatively the patient deteriorated neurologically and a computer tomogram of the brain showed multiple intracerebral hemorrhages. Suspected is either rupture of the pericardial echinococcus cysts with subsequent haematogenous spread or the presence of multiple intracranial mycotic aneurysms, manifesting themselves as multiple intracranial haemorrhages.
