Transthoracic fine needle aspiration was performed on pulmonary nodules of unknown etiology in a 22-year-old male. Cytologic examination of variously stained smears of the aspirate suggested a metastatic tumor, consistent with alveolar soft-part sarcoma. This diagnosis was confirmed by subsequent histologic examination of an excised thigh mass, which revealed alveolar soft-part sarcoma with an associated arteriovenous malformation. The cytologic findings of alveolar soft-part sarcoma are discussed along with a brief review of this uncommon neoplasm.
