Osteoporosis is a major cause of disability in elderly subjects. It represents a heterogenous group of disorders of skeletal homeostasis characterized by reduced bone mass with defective skeletal function. It is a poorly understood entity for which there is at present no effective therapy. In this review, we summarize what is known about the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and discuss the available therapeutic modalities. We suggest that the future approach will be to identify risk factors and apply preventive measures in the preclinical stage of this crippling disorder.
骨质疏松症是老年人群致残的主要原因。它代表了一组骨骼稳态紊乱的异质性疾病，其特征是骨量减少且骨骼功能存在缺陷。这是一个目前了解甚少的实体疾病，目前尚无有效的治疗方法。在本综述中，我们总结了关于骨质疏松症发病机制的已知信息，并讨论了现有的治疗方式。我们认为，未来的方法将是识别风险因素，并在这种致残性疾病的临床前期阶段采取预防措施。
