During the past 30 years 63 patients with gallstone ileus underwent surgical treatment. The mortality rate decreased from 54,5% to 27%, it is mainly caused by the advanced age of the patients and difficulties with early diagnosis. A subsequent cholecystectomy is to be considered cautiously depending on the patient's age.
