Synovial effusions of the knee may produce a Baker's cyst which can dissect downwards or rupture. The synovial fluid released on rupture of such a cyst in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or calcium pyrophosphate disease is highly irritating to tissues and may produce a clinical picture mimicking deep-vein thrombosis.
