The primary factors that result in pulmonary embolism are venous stasis, intimal damage and hypercoagulability. Although pulmonary embolism is rare after calcaneal fracture, the possibility should not be overlooked because of the gravity of the consequences. Awareness of the risk factors resulting from the combination of long-term bed rest and immobilization may reduce the occurrence of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
